Chapter 1 Homework Answers
SECTION 1 QUICK CHECK: List the two biggest differences between LD and Policy Debate. 1. LD is one on one and policy is two on two. 2. LD uses questions of value, policy uses questions of policy.
Give an example of each of the type of “question” that can be discussed and then list which type of debate uses each question. 1. Example statement such as “Capital punishment is justified.” Questions of value are used in LD. 2. Example statement such as “The United States should substantially change its foreign policy towards Russia.” Questions of policy are used in policy debate. 3. Example statement such as “The earth is square.” Questions of fact are not used in debate.
SECTION 2 QUICK CHECK: List the two purposes of a resolution. 1. To notify debaters of what they will be debating during a tournament. 2. To allocate ground between the affirmative and negative.
List the three reasons that debate is different from an argument. 1. There is no discussion between a debater and their opponent (except for the cross examination period). 2. Debate is strictly structured with time limits – debaters may not interrupt or speak any time they feel like it. 3. During a debate, you will never convince your opponent that you are right.
Chapter 2 Homework Answers
SECTION 1 QUICK CHECK: List the three requirements of a value. 1. It must be intrinsically valuable. 2. It must be universally valuable. 3. It must be valuable in context of the resolution.
Think of three values not already listed in this section. (Any number of answers will work here) 1. Loyalty 2. Happiness 3. Social Welfare
Think of two values that do not meet at least one of the requirements of a value and explain why. (Answers will vary) 1. My Car: I do not value my car intrinsically. Instead, I really value the freedom that my car provides. Freedom is a more appropriate value. 2. Money: Money is only instrumentally valuable, or in context of what it can buy for you. Thus money is not intrinsically valuable.
SECTION 3 QUICK CHECK: Explain the difference between the two types of criteria that can be used in a debate case. The first type of criterion can sound a lot like a value (this is a common language criterion). It sets up a simplistic ethical system by which to evaluate the value and the round. The second type of criterion is philosophical and sets up a more complex (thought-out) system for evaluating the value and the round.
Give two examples of a criterion that could also be used as a value. 1. Safety 2. Progress
SECTION 5 QUICK CHECK: Write two tag lines for the resolution: The random testing of student athletes for illegal drug use is justified. 1. Random drug testing provides safety for society. 2. Random drug testing undermines an athlete’s privacy.
Explain why having three different parts of a contention is important. 1. The claim of the contention provides an easily understandable thesis sentence for the argument you want to prove. 2. The warrant provides proof to substantiate your claim. 3. The impact explains why the argument is important in context of the round and the value/criterion.
What might happen if you take a quote out of context and your opponent tells the judge? Your judge may decide to vote against you for cheating or may decide that your opponent wins the point that you made when you took a quote out of context.
SECTION 7 QUICK CHECK: In what cases might you use a preview in your case? What benefit does a preview serve? You may put a preview in your case if your case is slightly shorter than it needs to be. You may never cut out relevant argumentation to include a preview. A preview serves to further clarify the structure of your case.
What do the introduction and closing of a case have in common? Why are they different? An introduction and conclusion should both be short and compelling reasons why the judge should vote for your side. An introduction, however, is a required component of your case. A conclusion is optional.
CHAPTER REVIEW: 2-1, Short Answer How should the value and criterion interrelate in your debate case? The criterion should support (or a way to provide) your value in the round.
What purpose do contentions serve in your debate case? The contentions are the real reasons the judge should vote for your side. Contentions should be an illustration of how the criterion functions.
Explain the two different types of criteria that you can use in your case. Which one is the best? The first type of criterion can sound a lot like a value (this is a common language criterion). It sets up a simplistic ethical system by which to evaluate the value and the round. The second type of criterion is philosophical and sets up a more complex (thought-out) system for evaluating the value and the round. A philosophical criterion is the best.
Find one piece of evidence without a warrant and one piece with a warrant. (Answers will vary)
Evidence without a warrant: “It is obvious that Michael Jackson is really weird” Evidence with a warrant: “It is obvious that Michael Jackson is really weird. He wore pajamas to court and dangled his baby out of a window.”
CHAPTER REVIEW: 2-2, Multiple Choice 1. D 2. D 3. B
